Arc Studio alternatives
Arc Studio alternatives start from the feature you are missing
Arc Studio’s pricing page is one of the few that prints the numbers: Free at $0, Essentials at $69 a year, Pro at $99 a year, plus a seven-day Pro trial. Offline desktop and iPad are included. There is no Android app. Character images, research and table reads are credit add-ons, not part of the subscription. An alternative is justified if you need simultaneous co-writing, a Linux desktop license, a production breakdown, or a dramaturg that lives in the story bible. It is not justified if $99 a year already buys the outlining room you use.

What does Arc Studio already do well?
Give the product its due before you shop. The price is legible. The free plan exists. The FAQ says one subscription covers Mac, Windows, iPad, iPhone and the browser, and that the app keeps working offline. Pro is where season outlines, revision history and feedback links sit. For a writer who thinks in cards and wants the iPad in the same subscription, that is a coherent offer, and $99 a year is less than many people spend discovering that.
The limits are also printed, which is rare. AI is not “included intelligence.” It is credits. Inviting collaborators requires a subscription even though guests can join on the free plan. Android is a browser, not an app, and long-term offline on Android is not promised. If one of those sentences is your whole complaint, an alternative can answer it. If none of them is, you are bored, not blocked.
Which missing piece points to which tool?
Missing simultaneous typing points to WriterDuet, not to a different outliner. Three projects are free. Plus is $9.99 a month, Pro is $11.99, and Premium is $13.99, or $7.49, $8.99 and $10.49 billed annually. Offline sync starts on Plus. Missing a machine you own, especially Linux, points to Fade In’s trial and the $79.95 / $99.95 license page. Missing a call sheet points to Celtx, where Writer is $14.99 a month or $134.88 a year. Missing Final Draft’s revision colors points to Final Draft, at the $199.99 displayed price, not to another browser.
Missing a dramaturg points to Cinequill. Arc Studio will sell you character images and a research assistant as add-ons. Cinequill will not draw the character. It will ask whether the character’s want can survive the midpoint, inside a project that also holds the bible and the draft. Pro includes 1,500,000 tokens a month. A one-off top-up is €5 for 500,000 tokens, and it does not expire. The free plan does not cap projects. It also does not work offline. That trade is the whole decision against Arc Studio’s offline apps.

Is the Pro plan the thing you should replace?
Often, no. If you are paying $99 because the season outline and the revision history are how the room runs, replacing Arc Studio means rebuilding that room. WriterDuet can be the room if the room types together. Cinequill can be the room if the room develops story and then writes. Neither imports an Arc Studio season board by magic. Export what you can to Fountain or FDX before you cancel, and keep the Pro month that still has the history.
Replace Pro if you bought it for the AI add-ons and then did not use them, or if you bought it hoping it would be a story bible. Those are different products wearing a similar screenshot. The credit price on top of $99 is the clue. A dramaturg that is metered as tokens inside the writing project is a different meter. Compare the meter you will actually watch.
What does a fair trial look like?
Use Arc Studio’s seven-day Pro trial if you have not, on a sequence you care about, offline, on the iPad if that is the device you claimed to want. If the trial solves it, stop reading alternatives. If the trial solves the outline and the draft is still false, open Cinequill’s free plan on the same premise and refuse to write the scene until the bible has a want and an obstacle.
Use WriterDuet only if you have a second person. A solo trial of a collaboration app flatters the page and hides the product. Use Fade In if the question is “do I want to stop paying annually.” A one-time license answers that. A new subscription does not. The hub page is where those prices sit next to each other with the same verification date.
What is Arc Studio not required to be?
It is not required to be a dramaturg, and the pricing page does not pretend it is. The AI on offer is a set of credit add-ons: character images, research, a table read. That can be exactly what a visual writer wants, and it is a different meter from Cinequill’s tokens, which pay for questions and for a rewrite of a selection. Pro includes 1,500,000 tokens a month. A one-off top-up is €5 for 500,000 tokens, and it does not expire. If you are leaving Arc Studio because the add-ons felt like a second bill, say so, and then check that the tool you pick has the help you will actually open. A dramaturg you ignore is the same waste as credits you ignore.
It is not required to be Final Draft. Pro at $99 a year buys season outlines, revision history and feedback links, according to the FAQ we read. It does not buy the production revision colors a post house may still ask for. The Final Draft page showed $199.99 displayed. Fade In lists $79.95 and $99.95 for a desktop license that includes Linux. Those are the delivery alternatives. Arc Studio’s offline desktop and iPad apps are the reason many people should stay, especially if Android was never the device. There is no Android app. The browser is the Android plan, and long-term offline there is not promised.
It is not required to host your breakdown. Celtx is the name in this set that advertises schedule and budget. Writer is $14.99 a month or $134.88 a year, Writer Pro is $24.99 or $224.88, and Team starts at $29.99 or $269.88. Leaving Arc Studio for Celtx is a change of job, from outline to production, not a cheaper outline. The free-software page is where the $0 plan sits next to WriterDuet’s three projects and Cinequill’s uncapped projects. Use it when the argument is the ceiling. Use this page when the argument is the missing feature.
How do you leave without losing the board?
Export what Arc Studio will give you before the Pro month ends. Fountain or FDX is the file Cinequill and WriterDuet can both live with. A season board may not survive that export as a season board. Accept the loss or keep the subscription. There is no moral victory in cancelling and then rebuilding forty cards from a screenshot.
In the new tool, rebuild one sequence, not the series. In Cinequill, the sequence needs a want in the bible before it needs pages. The free beat-sheet calculator will place Save the Cat’s fifteen beats on a length if that is your lens. It will not import the Arc Studio cards. In WriterDuet, the sequence needs a second person in the file the same day, or you have not tested the product. In Fade In, the sequence needs to feel fine offline. If it does, the annual plan was the thing you were tired of, and the license is the answer.
Then write down the price you almost paid twice. Arc Studio Pro at $99 a year plus credits is one bill. Cinequill Pro at €12 a month or €115 a year before VAT is another. WriterDuet Plus at $9.99 a month, Pro at $11.99 and Premium at $13.99 is a third, or $7.49, $8.99 and $10.49 billed annually. Add them only if each one has a weekly job. The verification date is the day those printed numbers were read. When the date is stale, read the pages again instead of trusting this one.
A different job, a different tool
Keep the tool that matches the work
If you are leaving a program, try the next one on a scene you already know. Cinequill is the fit when the missing piece is story development, not only page formatting.
Frequently asked questions
What is the closest Arc Studio alternative?
For outlining, there is no cheaper printed plan that copies it exactly. For co-writing, look at WriterDuet. For story development with a dramaturg, look at Cinequill. For a one-time desktop app, look at Fade In.
Does Arc Studio include AI?
Not in the subscription price we read. Character images, research and table reads are marked as paid credit add-ons. Cinequill’s dramaturg is part of the product and is limited by the monthly token allowance.
Can collaborators use Arc Studio for free?
Arc Studio’s FAQ says inviting collaborators requires a subscription, while joining and collaborating can be done on the free plan. Cinequill Free includes one co-author per project; Pro removes the cap.
Does Arc Studio work offline?
Yes, according to its FAQ, on the desktop and Apple mobile apps. There is no Android app. Cinequill needs a connection.

ComparisonCinequill vs WriterDuet (2026): development room or co-writing desk?
Cinequill and WriterDuet both live in the browser and both export industry files. They are not substitutes. WriterDuet is a co-writing desk: real-time.
