Celtx alternatives
Celtx alternatives make sense when you are not planning a shoot
Celtx is a writing studio bolted to a production studio. The shop the pricing page calls lists Writer at $14.99 a month or $134.88 a year, Writer Pro at $24.99 or $224.88, and Team from $29.99 or $269.88. Free is 1 project. Writer holds up to 3. Writer Pro and Team list unlimited projects. Yearly cards say Save 25%. Leave Celtx if you are still developing the story and the production grid is noise. Stay if the next document you need is a stripboard rather than a better midpoint.

What are people trying to escape?
The complaints that show up around Celtx are not usually “it cannot format a slugline.” They are about weight and about money that is hard to quote. The pricing page is a matrix: project caps that change by column, story tools on the higher writing plan, and a long list of production modules marked as optional add-ons. That is a fair product if you are a small production company. It is a lot of surface if you are one writer trying to find the third act.
A second reason to look elsewhere is the writing itself. Celtx’s grid includes a beat sheet and storyboards. Those are useful sketches. They are not the same as a story bible tied to characters and to an editor, and they are not a dramaturg. If the beat sheet in Celtx is where your drafts go to stall, another beat sheet inside another suite will stall the same way. You need a different job, not a different logo.
Which alternative matches the job you still have?
If the job is still the story, Cinequill is the relevant alternative. The free plan does not ask you to pick a production add-on. It gives you the bible, eight narrative methods, the editor and FDX, Fountain and PDF. Pro includes 1,500,000 tokens a month. A one-off top-up is €5 for 500,000 tokens, and it does not expire. You will not get a call sheet. That absence is the feature.
If the job is co-writing pages you already believe in, WriterDuet’s three free projects and real-time cursors are clearer than Celtx’s studio seats. Plus is $9.99 a month, Pro is $11.99, and Premium is $13.99. If the job is a clean outline on iPad with a price you can cite, Arc Studio prints $69 and $99 a year. If the job is a desktop file a producer will open without comment, Final Draft’s page showed $249.99 list and $199.99 displayed, and Fade In lists $79.95 and $99.95 for a license that includes Linux.
None of these replaces Celtx’s breakdown-to-budget path. If that path is why you pay, an alternative is a downgrade. Use the table as a reason code, not as a dare to switch.

What should you confirm on Celtx before you cancel?
The public shop lists Writer at $14.99 a month or $134.88 a year, Writer Pro at $24.99 or $224.88, and Team from $29.99 or $269.88. A logged-in studio can still differ from that list. Also write down whether breakdown and schedule are included or add-ons on your tier, because the public grid marks them as optional on the lower plans. If those modules are the only reason the subscription exists, cancelling to save a writing-tool fee is how productions lose a week.
Export the script before you decide. If the file you get is FDX or Fountain, you can leave without rewriting. If it is not, budget a conversion afternoon and only then compare Cinequill or WriterDuet. A cheaper app that cannot read your draft is not cheaper.
How do you know the switch worked?
Give the new tool the scene Celtx was not helping. If the new tool’s first suggestion is another production form, you have changed vendors and not problems. If it asks what the character wants, or it puts a beat next to a page number you can check with the free calculator, you have changed problems. That is the only success condition that matters.
Keep Celtx for the shoot if the shoot is real. Development software and production software are allowed to be two invoices. The mistake is paying the production invoice while you are still pretending to develop, or paying a development subscription and then rebuilding the schedule by hand because you refused the add-on. The filmmaker guide on this site is about that later stage. This page is about leaving early, on purpose.
Which alternative fails which kind of writer?
WriterDuet fails the writer who wanted a call sheet and got a cursor. Three free projects and a Premium plan at $13.99 a month are a co-writing desk, with offline sync after the fact. They are not a budget. If the reason you opened Celtx was the production grid, WriterDuet is a sideways move into a different complaint. It succeeds the duo who already believe the scene and are tired of emailing Fountain files. That is a real alternative. It is not a universal one.
Arc Studio fails the writer who wanted Android offline or a dramaturg inside the bible. It succeeds the writer who can say the price out loud: Free at $0, Essentials at $69 a year, Pro at $99 a year, a seven-day Pro trial, desktop and iPad offline, and AI features sold as credits. If a price you can say out loud is what you wanted, Arc Studio’s page is the relief, and the outline is the job. It will not replace the stripboard.
Final Draft fails the writer on a Chromebook and the writer who is not ready to deliver. The product page showed $249.99 list and $199.99 displayed, macOS 12+ and Windows 11, not Chromebook. Fade In fails the writer who wanted a browser room. It succeeds the writer who wants one license, Linux included, at the $79.95 and $99.95 listed on the purchase page, tax possibly extra. Cinequill fails the writer who needed the schedule. It succeeds the writer whose midpoint is still a guess. Pro includes 1,500,000 tokens a month. A one-off top-up is €5 for 500,000 tokens, and it does not expire. Name the failure you can live with. That is the alternative.
What should you do with the script you already have?
Do not retype it to feel decisive. Cinequill imports Fountain, FDX, DOCX and PDF. If Celtx can hand you one of those, the draft moves and the production objects stay behind, which is the correct loss if you are leaving the production studio on purpose. If Celtx cannot, the conversion afternoon is part of the price of the alternative, and it belongs in the decision before you cancel. The Film and TV script editor help says Export to Script writes .txt or .fountain, and PDF comes from Print or Download. That article does not list an FDX export. Import on the same page accepts .fdx.
Once the pages are in the new tool, do not start at page one. Start at the decision the production grid was helping you avoid. Put the logline through the Logline Doctor. Put the length through the free Save the Cat calculator if that board is your method, and remember the calculator is arithmetic, not the official suite. Then invite one co-author on Cinequill’s free plan, or a partner into one of WriterDuet’s three projects, and see whether another person can find the same hole. A switch that only changes your solitude has not switched anything.
Leave the Celtx subscription in place until that experiment has a result. Two weeks of overlap is cheaper than a lost breakdown. If the experiment sends you back, you have learned that the weight was the work. If it does not, cancel with the file already out, and use the hub when the next question is Final Draft rather than Celtx. One page, one reason. The verification date on the price line is the day these amounts were read. When that date is stale, read the shop again.
A different job, a different tool
Keep the tool that matches the work
If you are leaving a program, try the next one on a scene you already know. Cinequill is the fit when the missing piece is story development, not only page formatting.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best Celtx alternative for screenwriters?
If you do not need breakdowns and budgets, Cinequill covers story development and screenplay export. WriterDuet is the better switch for real-time co-writing. Arc Studio is the better switch for a priced outlining plan. Final Draft remains the delivery standard.
Is Celtx free?
The pricing grid lists a Free plan with 1 project. Writer allows up to 3. Writer Pro and Team list unlimited projects. Writer is $14.99 a month or $134.88 a year. Free is not that paid plan.
Does Cinequill do scheduling and budgeting?
No. That is Celtx’s side of the line, often as add-ons. Cinequill stops at the story, the draft and the export.
Can I move a Celtx script out?
Confirm the export format on your current plan. Cinequill imports Fountain, FDX, DOCX and PDF. If Celtx gives you one of those, the move is ordinary. If it does not, do not cancel first.
