How to write a series bible (the document, not the tool)
A series bible fixes the DNA of a show (concept, tone, characters, world rules, generative potential across seasons) and works both as a pitch and as a writers' room manual.
This is not RAI's 2013 The Bible
In Italian search, «bibbia» collides with La Bibbia, the 2013 RAI-branded miniseries. This page is about the development document for a TV series: a packet that says what the story is, how it repeats, and who is allowed to change. It is not a television title, not scripture, and not the in-app story bible inside CineQuill.
The product walkthrough lives elsewhere: How to use the story bible. That page fills project fields (logline, theme, world). This one describes the document you send to a commissioner, a network or a room.
Selling bible, room bible, pitch deck, pilot
Four objects often share one attachment. A selling bible convinces the people who can say yes. A room bible aligns the people who will write later episodes. A pitch deck is visual and short. The pilot is the narrative proof, not the manual.
There is no official page count. «Ten pages» or «forty» describes one company's habit, not a WGA or RAI standard. Ask for the brief instead of inventing a correct length.
| Document | Who it speaks to | What it must do | What it is not |
|---|---|---|---|
| Selling bible | Commissioners, networks, streamers, producers | Make DNA, tone, engine and series potential legible | The pilot script |
| Room bible | Showrunner, writers' room, incoming writers | Lock rules, taboos, arcs and what cannot be burned | A ten-slide pitch |
| Pitch deck | Meetings, first-contact email | Images, comparables, visual hook | The season manual |
| Pilot | Readers and, later, the room | Prove the voice on the page | The bible: it is an episode, not the DNA |
A useful skeleton (no magic page count)
An order that holds up in many European rooms, without pretending it is a rulebook: logline; format (length, episode count, closed/ongoing); tone and what is forbidden; generative engine (what repeats each episode); season-1 map; character grid (want, wound, function); world rules; honest comparables (not «Succession at the seaside»).
If the engine is missing, you have a sliced-up film. If the character grid is missing, the room will invent guest stars instead of pressure. If comparables are only hit titles, you are not stating tone: you are asking for a budget.
Pitch and writers' room: two readings of the same DNA
In a pitch the bible has to land in twenty minutes: why this show, why now, why these people. In a room it has to survive a new writer in week six: what the protagonist may do, may not do, which secrets stay closed until the season finale.
The same logline should survive both readings. If you sell a procedural and the room is writing a serial mystery, the DNA is already split — and a copilot will only notice if those promises live in the same project.
How CineQuill uses it
CineQuill does not replace the Word or PDF packet you deliver to a commissioner. It keeps logline, world, characters and the pilot pages in one project, so you can see whether the bible's promises match the pages.
The Copilot can ask: does this pilot scene break a world rule? Does this cameo burn an arc you reserved for S2? It does not write the bible for the room, and it is not anyone's «The Bible», RAI included.

Frequently asked questions
What is a series bible?
The document that fixes a show's DNA: concept, tone, characters, world rules and potential across seasons. It serves both the pitch and the writers' room.
Is it the same as the story bible in CineQuill?
No. CineQuill's story bible is a project tool (fields, coherence, Copilot). This page describes the series document you deliver. The tool guide is How to use the story bible.
How many pages should it be?
There is no official page count. Each company asks for a different length. Ask for the brief instead of copying a number from a listicle.
Do I still need one if I have a pilot?
Yes, if the show has to last. The pilot proves the voice; the bible says what can repeat without burning the engine.
Can AI write it?
It can help you find holes (a character with no function, a rule the pilot contradicts). It should not invent the DNA: if the AI writes a bible the pages cannot support, you have a brochure, not a series.
